Washington (Peoples Daily) – US President Donald Trump is expected to unveil a new Middle East peace plan at the White House on Tuesday. He met Monday with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House to brief him on the plan’s details.

Trump said that it will be a peace plan capable of solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “It might have a change,” said Trump as he opened meetings with Netanyahu at an initial Oval Office meeting on Monday to discuss the long-promised peace plan. Palestine fiercely rejects the plan, which it was not consulted on.

The Palestinians steadfastly refuse to even speak to Trump, and have urged other Arab nations to boycott Tuesday’s launch of the plan. There is great skepticism over the plan’s chances of success.

According to the Associated Press, the upcoming proposal is widely expected to be favorable to Israel. Trump’s proposal, described as a so-called Century Agreement, has been in preparation for quite a long time.

The economic part of Trump’s version of the Middle East peace plan was announced last June. Trump ’s son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner proposed an economic plan called “Peace to Prosperity,” proposing a $50 billion investment plan to boost the economies of Palestine and neighboring Arab countries such as Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon.

No Palestinians have been invited to Tuesday’s White House event. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh on Monday urged international powers to boycott the plan, which he said was designed "to protect Trump from impeachment and protect Netanyahu from prison."

"It is not a Middle East peace plan," Shtayyeh said. "This plan gives Israel sovereignty over Palestinian territory.”

On Monday, Trump also met separately with Benny Gantz, the main political rival of Netanyahu. A month later, Netanyahu and Gantz will compete fiercely in the Israeli election, which is the third time within one year.

Both Netanyahu and Gantz hailed Trump’s plan as a historic milestone and pledged to work on its implementation after winning the elections.

Analysts said that the plan is only another political gift among a series that Trump has given to Netanyahu and Israel, including breaking an international diplomatic consensus and recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel; acknowledging Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights from Syria; and no longer opposing Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.

Analysts consider that a biased peace agreement is better than nothing for Trump, and may help him in the upcoming presidential election.
