TUNIS, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper will pay an official visit to Tunisia on Wednesday as part of a tour of the Maghreb countries, private television Nessma TV reported Tuesday.

The purpose of Esper's visit to Tunisia is to confirm the U.S. commitment to the security of the region and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the security area and the fight against terrorism.

This will be Esper's first tour to the Maghreb since he took office at the U.S. Department of Defense. He will meet Tunisian President Kais Saied and Defense Minister Ibrahim Bartagi.
