Washington (People’s Daily) - The US House of Representatives passed a legislation early Saturday that would provide an economic relief package for the country's response to the coronavirus outbreak. The package focuses on free testing, support for paid sick leave, expanded unemployment insurance and expanded food subsidies, US media reported.

Before the House voted on the legislation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she had reached an agreement with the Trump administration on the relief package. Trump himself later confirmed his support on Twitter and largely means the bill will move quickly in the Republican-controlled Senate and the White House.

According to Washington Post, negotiations between Democrats and the Trump administration over the bill have been fraught with twists and turns, with the biggest concern being that the president himself may oppose the bill. Earlier, Trump suggested that payroll taxes should be cut to stimulate the economy, but lawmakers from both parties were lukewarm to the proposal. In addition, some Republicans do not support measures such as an expansion of Medicaid spending.
