The government of the city of San Francisco in California, USA, passed a resolution Tuesday declaring the National Rifle Association (NRA) a "domestic terrorist organization."

The city government also called on other cities, states and the federal government to take the same position on the NRA, a pro-gun organization based in the US.

Passed on Tuesday, the resolution said the US is "plagued by an epidemic of gun violence" and accused the NRA of using "its considerable wealth and organizational strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence," according to Fox News.

"All countries have violent and hateful people, but only in America do we give them ready access to assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, thanks, in large part, to the National Rifle Association's influence," the resolution says.

The resolution also mentioned that the city should avoid doing business with the NRA or organizations associated with it.

According to data from the Mass Shooting Tracker, a US website which tracks mass shooting, at least 93 people in the US were killed in mass shootings in August.

“People are dying every day in this country,” said District Two Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who wrote the resolution for the city. “And doing nothing is not an option, and that's what the NRA continues to do.”

Walmart, the American multinational retail corporation, announced on the same day the resolution has passed, that it would stop sales of some types of ammunition and handguns in Alaska, and asked customers to stop carrying firearms openly in its stores, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“This stunt is an effort to distract from the problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and petty crime, to name a few. Their wasting taxpayer dollars to declare 5M law-abiding Americans domestic terrorists, and it’s shameful,” the NRA tweeted Wednesday in response to the resolution.
