US stocks open sharply lower

NEW YORK, May 6 (Xinhua) -- US stocks opened sharply lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average once plunging more than 450 points in early morning sessions.

The Dow dived 471 points, or over 1.77 percent, to as low as 26,033.95, shortly after the opening bell.

The S&P 500 tumbled 43.19 points, or 1.47 percent, to 2,902.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index decreased 154.05 points, or 1.89 percent, to 8,009.94.

All of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors traded lower around Monday's opening, with the industrials sector down nearly 1.6 percent, leading the losers.

Shares of Caterpillar and Boeing, companies with high overseas revenue exposure, both declined more than 2 percent in early trading, among the worst performers in the Dow.

US equities posted mixed results in the week ending May 3, with the Dow falling 0.14 percent, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rose 0.20 percent and 0.22 percent, respectively, as Wall Street digested a key announcement from the Federal Reserve and a wave of corporate earnings.
