Ghana’s Cape Coast Castle is on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List. It is here that visitors can learn about the history of the slave trade.

One of 30 "slave castles,” known formally as commercial forts, it was built by European traders during the country’s early colonial period. In 1653, Sweden used the location for as a lumber and gold trading outpost. It wasn’t until later that it became a stronghold within the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
