Drone footage from the Sioux County Sheriff's office shows a line of train cars piled up across the Floyd River.
Local media report that the accident has demolished a bridge that once spanned the river.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, and have urged commuters to stay away from the area as emergency services move in.
Alton city officials say that so far, there are no hazardous materials leaking from the site.
