Vietnam sees more traffic accident fatalities in New Year holiday

HANOI, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) - In the four-day New Year holiday, Vietnam faced 136 traffic accidents which killed 111 people and injured 54 others, the country's Traffic Police Department said on Wednesday.

During the 2019 New Year holiday which concluded on Tuesday, traffic police nationwide handled 15,200 cases of traffic law violations, revoking 3,300 driving licenses and imposing total fines of 13.8 billion Vietnamese dong (600,000 U.S. dollars) on violators.

In the three-day 2018 New Year holiday, Vietnam witnessed 124 traffic accidents which claimed 67 human lives and injured 74 people.

In 2018, the country reported 18,232 traffic accidents which killed 8,125 people, and seriously injured 5,124 people and slightly wounded 9,070 others, posting year-on-year declines of 9.2 percent, 1.9 percent, 8.3 percent and 20.8 percent respectively, said the department.
