On April 26, 2016, at a symposium with intellectuals, model workers and youth representatives, President Xi Jinping stressed that young people should consciously engage in learning and continuously enhance their abilities.

He noted that youth is a golden period, and that whether one builds a solid knowledge foundation during this time can influence, and even determine, the course of one's life. He urged young people to pursue learning with eagerness and perseverance, reading both "books with words" and "books without words."

"Books with words" refer to the volumes of scientific and cultural knowledge recorded in the classics of human civilization, while "books without words" refer to life experience and social knowledge gained through practice.

By comparing learning to the reading of "books with words" and "books without words," Xi illustrated the correct approach to learning and highlighted the importance of combining study with practice in the development of young people. Through this metaphor, he expressed his high expectations for them to read diligently and gain experience through action.
