Days before the 2020 Spring Festival, President Xi Jinping visited Simola Wa village in Tengchong, Yunnan Province, Southwest China, to learn about rural revitalization and the development of distinctive ethnic minority communities.

"Simola" means "a place of happiness" in the Wa language. This traditional village, with a history spanning over 500 years, is home to a harmonious community of the Wa, Han, Bai and Dai peoples.

Under warm sunlight, villagers performed a lively Wa ethnic dance in the village square. Following local custom, Xi beat a wooden Wa drum three times to bless the coming year with good harvests, peace and prosperity.
