Ahead of the Spring Festival in 2014, President Xi Jinping visited Hohhot Children's Welfare Center in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Established by the local government, the welfare center provides care, medical treatment, rehabilitation, education and placement services. At that time, it housed more than 200 orphans and children with disabilities.

During his visit, Xi warmly chatted with the children. Wang Yani, one of the children, has a hearing impairment. Xi visited her room, looked through her albums and sign language books, and encouraged both her and Yan Zhijing, another resident of the center who was attending university, to study hard and succeed academically.
Wang expressed her gratitude by bending her thumb, which means "Thank you" in Chinese sign language. Xi smiled as he learned the gesture and followed along, saying, "This means 'good,' and bending it means 'thank you.'"
