Jakarta (People’s Daily) – Hundreds of people gathered in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta Friday night to light candles and pray that Wuhan will overcome the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The event with the theme of “Spirit for Wuhan” was held to collect donations to buy masks that will be distributed to people in Wuhan.

“This activity was initiated from the grassroots level and now about 55 organizations have joined,” said Ardy Susanto, central chairman of the Indonesian Chinese Youth Organization.

“We are from many different organizations from all segments, religions and ethnicities. We want to pray for Wuhan and China to resolve the COVID-19 issue as soon as possible. We hope China can find and manufacture medicines that can stop the virus.

“We also hope that we can provide some help through donations and to build the spirit and conviction for all the people in Wuhan who are still struggling with the epidemic.”

During the vigil, local Jakartans carried out on-site fundraising and sang Indonesian and Chinese songs. In the end, everyone held candles and blessed Wuhan in a neat song and shouted “Wuhan Jiayou, China Jiayou.”

The outbreak of the COVID-19 is undoubtedly not only a problem for the Wuhan community, but has also become a problem worldwide, according to Susanto, who said that the COVID-19 is currently not only a health issue but is also having an impact on other aspects of life, such as economic issues.

Susanto told the People’s Daily that, “we know China is working very hard to resolve this mess. From trying to isolate the virus to finding an antiviral medicine, they will do their best for everyone.

“We want everyone to know that we support China's efforts in this regard. Therefore, we are holding this event to instill the spirit of all those who are still working hard, they must know that they are not alone. And please don't give up.”

Susanto emphasized that it starts with faith and goodwill, adding that they are open to all organizations that wish to participate in prayers and donations.

“We hope that the effort is meaningful and can provide support and encouragement,” he said.
