Chinese doctors completed a double-lung transplant on a 66-year-old coronavirus patient on Sunday, marking the first kind of it for an elder patient.
The surgery was conducted in a negative pressure room at the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Zhejiang University with doctors wearing full-body protective suits.
The patient was diagnosed with coronavirus infection on January 31 and hospitalized two days later for emergency treatment. In spite of improving nucleic acid test results, she was still in critical condition and the virus had caused irreversible pulmonary disfunction.
The donated lungs came from a brain death donor in Central China’s Hunan and were transported by air Sunday afternoon.
The patient is currently in stable condition, with the transplanted lungs oxygenating well, the hospital said.
