Business Breakthrough (BBT) University in Tokyo held a ‘robot graduation’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The avatar robots, dubbed “Newme” by developer ANA holdings, were controlled by graduating students from their home. They were dressed in the standard graduation caps and downs for the ceremony, complete with tablets projecting the graduates’ faces.

The graduation was held for only four students to avoid a ‘large gathering’. But university staff and media were present at the ceremony.

The university said it hopes their innovative approach avoids mass gatherings.
