[Photo/Xinhua]BEIJING-The unparalleled passion ignited by the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games has spurred China's consumer and capital markets in the early days of the Year of the Tiger. The enthusiasm of hundreds of millions of spectators acted as a catalyst in creating new fashion trends in China's fast-moving consumer market and in kindling new interest among investors in the country's capital markets.Did you go skiing during the holiday? Many Chinese people ask their colleagues upon their return to work following the Spring Festival holiday, which concluded on Feb 6.The Chinese people's zeal for skiing peaked during this holiday as the opening of the Winter Olympics turned the already-popular sporting activity into a new fashion of consumption.Online travel service provider Qunar said skiing has made its way onto the list of top three hottest words searched on its platform for the first time ever, and the number of ski resort tickets sold on its platform doubled during the holiday compared to last year.Data from Chinese e-commerce giant JD showed the overall transaction value of ski sports products increased by 322 percent year-on-year during the period, with ski masks having increased by 15 times.Since China's successful bid for the Winter Olympics in 2015, the once niche activity of skiing quickly gained popularity in the country. Industry data showed the number of skiers reached 13.05 million in 2019, nearly doubling from that of 2014. Ski resorts rose from 568 in 2015 to 770 in 2019 and are expected to top 1,000 this year.Consumption data demonstrated a nationwide passion for skiing, with traditional resorts in China's northeastern region and indoor resorts in the country's south and southwestern regions becoming hot tourist destinations, said ...

Olympic mascot craze shows consumption, growth linked

For me, one of the abiding memories of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be the amazing popularity of the mascot Bing Dwen Dwen. The licensed online store selling Olympic souvenirs announced the presale of Bing Dwen Dwen keychains would kick off at 4 pm on Feb 9. I was determined to own the endearing mascot. So, I placed the order for some keychains by adding them to my shopping e-cart well in advance and waited eagerly for the critical moment to arrive so I could promptly click and pay.As the big day arrived and the clock struck 4, I held my breath and tapped on the pay button on my smartphone screen in a jiffy, without wasting a nanosecond. Yet, wonder of wonders, the flash sale, it seemed, ended for me even before it began. The e-store announced on my phone screen, rather coldly and heartlessly, I should add, that the keychains were either sold out already or out of stock as demand outstripped supply.I can assure you mine wasn't the only heart that lay broken. On social media platform Weibo, the topic of Bing Dwen Dwen sold out received the attention of-wait for it-more than 290 million people! I learned later that 1 million Bing Dwen Dwen-themed products launched on Feb 20 were all sold out on the same day. Will the craze for owning Bing Dwen Dwen products continue? Maybe it will. Perhaps not. But I'd like to bet the phenomenon epitomizes a trend that will continue and bolster China's economic prospects this year. And that is, the great potential of China's consumer market.Chinese consumers have a growing appetite for goods and services that satisfy not just the superficial or physical dimension of one's being but also deeper, more profound aspirations. This pursuit has been a driver of consumption upgrade in China. With the continuous rise in Chinese consumers' living conditions and income levels, consumption upgrade will likely deepen this year and even drive economic growth.Economic data attest to my assertion. For instance, retail sales of gold, sil...

What makes 2022 Winter Olympics uniquely Chinese?

BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Jackline Mukaragye found it very hard to buy a Bing Dwen Dwen - the mascot for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.Discussing the long queues outside souvenir stores and out of stock signs at online shops, the 23-year-old student from Rwanda said she totally understands people's affection for the chubby panda figurine in a suit of ice and Shuey Rhon Rhon - the fluffy red lantern-shaped Paralympic mascot. They are so Chinese, said Mukaragye, who was especially fond of the latter. Red is the color of China and Spring Festival. It is a color of good luck. The mascots are just one example of traditional Chinese culture being embodied at the 2022 Winter Olympics. It is an important part of Chinese culture to emphasize the harmony between nature and human beings. As athletes entered the stadium, placards bearing names of all competing delegations in the shape of snowflakes grabbed viewers' attention.
